The Sustainable Development Awards of Excellence
Excerpt from the 1997 Sustainable Development Awards of Excellence information brochure:
"A VISION FOR MANITOBA
This vision recommended by the Manitoba Round Table on the Environment and Economy has been adopted by the provincial governed and is outlined in the document - A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY FOR MANITOBA.
This vision will provide clean, healthy air, land and water for our future generations. It recognizes that continued economic development is needed to sustain our province and pay for important environmental initiatives.
The concept of sustainable development was given recognition by the World Commission on Environment and Development, which characterized it as paths of social, economic and political progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
Pine Ridge Wildlife and Environment Foundation Inc. was nominated in the category of HOUSEHOLD AND NEIGHBOUR along with Palliser Furniture (Prichard Farm Properties), Monsanto Canada Inc. (recycling and waste minimization activities in the Town of Mordon), Dr D.W. Penner Playground Committee (Dr D.W. Penner play structure), and the Rat River Clean Up Committee (Rat River Restoration Project). This nomination was kept as a surprised to Dan Ritchie until the day of the dinner on Wednesday, March 19, 1997 at The Lombard Hotel. Pine Ridge Wildlife and Environment Foundation Inc. won the nomination and Dan Ritchie was presented the award for his efforts by The Honourable Gary Filmon, then Premier of Manitoba.
